I participated in the first Midnight Balloon Rally in Jyväskylä on the 24th of July, 2009. It was a very delicious experience and gave quite new viewpoints to ballooning. Weather was utmost good, although at the time I arrived Jyväskylä by train, there were dark clouds and a little rain. About an hour earlier there had been a very heavy hail- and thunderstorm.
My balloon had 5 passengers, of which one was a radio reporter and one had a television camera with him. Radio and TV had their part from the event.
Summer nights are very light in Finland, and the norther you go, the lighter they are. Although balloons usually don't fly after sunset, in the midsummer there is enough light on the sky.
It was quite a sight, when 12 balloons began to rise one after another. My balloon unstuck the ground about 40 minutes before midnight. Lots of spectators were on the field and along roadsides.
We landed about 30 mins past midnight to a small field beside Highway 4, after crossing a lake. It was a beautiful sight when balloons mirrored from the water.
This was my 37th flight.
