- When I moved back to Reno in 2001 my best friend, Joe Smesko, took me to the Great Reno Balloon Race. Afterwards, I found out there was a group I could join and I could actually learn how to crew and help with the balloons. The next year I learned how to crew and on the first day of the Great Reno Balloon Race I got the opportunity to go up in a balloon for the first time . . . I was hooked!! I crewed each year at the races and also started crewing for the pilots in the Reno area.
Three years ago I met Jeff Haliczer and started crewing for him every weekend and started travelling with him to some of the events he attends. Jeff encouraged me to get my student certificate and offered to teach me how to fly! It's been a long journey . . . and many times I questioned whether or not I could learn to fly. Jeff continued to encourage me and push me towards my goal. I've come so far . . . I now know I can do it . . . and I will have my private license by the first of the year.
In March Jeff found a balloon he wanted to buy . . . and I bought his regular shaped balloon . . . Empty Pockets . . . the balloon I was, and still am, learning to fly in. Empty Pockets became "Overdraft". If, even 3 years ago, someone had told me that I would own my own balloon . . . I would have told them they were crazy!! I sometimes still can't believe that I have Overdraft!! I can't thank Jeff enough for the opportunity he's given me . . . and the instruction and help he's given me!
I have been in ballooning for going on 8 years now and I love every minute of it. I've made such good friends and met such great people. I'm looking forward to expanding my ballooning experience and going to events as a pilot instead of crew!!
