"What a great video. Haven't flown with snow on the ground for 30 years. Thanks for sharing what looked like a perfect winter flight."

Paolo Oggioni replied to Dennis Wolfe's discussion I should know this.
"Well in Italy and rest of Europe Yes. A tether even if on the ground is considered a flight and is logged in our log books and the log book of the balloon. You will need an LTA license if you tether in Europe. Ciao, Paolo"

Ron Frusher replied to Dennis Wolfe's discussion I should know this.
"The answer is NO. There are two types of tying down balloons. One is tethering which does not and the second is mooring which the FAA say you need a pilot license. I hope this clear it up for you. Ron"

"Interesting question, indeed! I remember being told (in the late 90's) that a tethered balloon is not considered an aircraft by the FAA. ( At that time there were bungee jumping operations that didn't fall under FAA rules.) The thing to…"

Ok, Just wondering. Last I knew he was in the Tampa area cause his e-mail address was Tampa-bay. He flies a balloon similar to mine.

Hi, thanks for the invite! When I read your message I was like no frickin' way. I paid for a flight w/Dick back in 1994 when I was 14. Were you crewing with him then? Who would've guessed we had something in common like that! I'm still here in Loves Park(born and raised). So how's Tampa treating you? Betcha you like the winters down there a whole heck of a lot better! :) Do you ever come back to Rockford?

Hey it's ok about not getting back right away.  I just figured you didn't get on here too much.  Guess I was right.

So you crewed in the mid 80's huh?  I remember one time Dick landed in my neighborhood in the 80's.  I'm not quite sure what yr it was since I was a kid, but everyone was so excited, obviously.  Did you go to the RocVale rallies then too?  We used to go up until they stopped.  I miss it, but I do go to the ones in Galena and up in Monroe, WI now.

Did you get your license up here then or after you moved away?  Did you ever talk to any of the other balloonists in the Rockford area too or just Dick?

So you got a new envelope huh?  What size/type are you flying?

Sorry about the million questions.  I guess it's just part of the getting to know each other.  Lol.

Well I hope it's warmer down there for you.  I'm so ready for winter to be done and over with.  Spring can come anytime now.

Hopefully we'll talk again soon!  And I hope you're able to fly soon!

Hey Dennis!

It's ok that you didn't see my post.  I just had the same thing happen to me w/one of my other friends on here.  He left me 2 posts and then a third and that third one was the one that I finally got a notification about.  Must be something up w/the system since I've never had it happen to me before.

Glad to hear you finally were able to fly recently.  I looked at your pics of the new envelope and I must say it's pretty cool lookin'!  I really like the color combo.  Should look pretty awesome when you glow.  Have you always flown Camerons?  How many balloons have you owned so far?

Do you do many rallies then?  I'm assuming you're participating in the one on April 2?  Hard to believe a new event season is upon us.  Seems like winter has lasted forever, but now I see the light at the end of the tunnel!  :)

I'd love to be able to get my license, but I never had a chance to crew and I always think is that going to be a drawback?  I've heard that it's better to crew first then pilot but my problem is no one really flies in the Rockford area anymore.  Dick retired a long time ago so that's out.  As did Bill O'Donnell and I know Tom Moore just sold his system so I'm not sure if he's done too or not.  Chuck Thomas never seems to fly his balloon around town anymore either except they do have a mini rally when they do the On The Waterfront festival in downtown Rockford every labor day weekend.  All these guys are getting up there in yrs too so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.  So I'm trying to brainstorm.  My thoughts are to maybe volunteer crew at some festivals around IL.  Decisions, decisions...

And yeah, I think you should bring your balloon up to Rockford!  Lol!
