A source for adhesive ripstop

Some things have been a bit hard to find in this whole process, so here’s a heads up on something that might help someone else out. After a fair bit of searching, Scobie managed to find a source for adhesive ripstop (by the meter, not on 50mm tape rolls) to use for the rego letters, but [...]

First inflation

Last Saturday (9th August) we cold/hot inflated our brand new homebuilt balloon, VH-XUP. Everything went well and now we just need to get the Certificate of Airworthiness so we can start flying it. Big thanks to not only the guys who helped us out on the morning to attach all the ropes/lines, but those who have been [...]

Todo

A bit of a update, now that we are nearly done I can put whats left into a short (or long?) list. Things to do before test inflation: Finish off turning vents (nearly done) Sew mouth and vent finishing tapes on Sew on 30 vent attachment points (10 x 3 positions for adjustability) Sew on the turning vent pulley attachment [...]

Update #22

At last check in the progress was 17 gores of completed panels. Only 3 more to go. Nomex arrived mid-week so that is one less thing to worry about. Only think left that is integral to the sewing is the load tapes. Arnold’s don’t seem to want to talk to me over the phone or over [...]

More forms, less sanity.

Just finished faxing off another round of forms to CASA late this week. Turns out a “Reservation of Rego Mark - Form0028″ needs to be submitted before you can register the aircraft, who would have thought! Also needed is an ARN (Aviataion Reference Number) as well, so that application form needs to be filled out. To [...]

About Me:
I have been ballooning since I can remember, and probably before that...

I have had my license for a while now, got it as soon as I turned 17, but not getting many hours because *someone* doesn't like sharing :D

Currently at RMIT Uni in Melbourne studying Electrical Engineering.

Interested in duct taping geeky tech things to balloons. Like flying solo... Flying high is boring, low is much more fun eh Justin?

Currently building my own balloon with my dad, see http://balloonbuildingblog.com

Like trying new things out with ballooning, especially for competition, as in gadgets and gizmos, also like a bit of photography on the side (see the crop rings above?).

Oh and he who has the most toys wins...

Wireless comms and remote tracking of balloons

(Wireless comms/moving map ground test setup)

For a few years now I have been trying to find ways to make ballooning more geeky and ultimately better for the pilots and crews. Creating a wireless link between crew cars and balloons (crew<->balloon, crew<->crew and balloon<->balloon) is one of the things I have been working on.

I am throwing what I am doing out there to show others whats possible and also in the hope of finding others… Continue

Model Balloon for sale in Sydney, AU

I am just reposting this from here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10771971&postcount=897 as I thought there may be some interest in it.

Post reads:

This is the real deal! The 2,500 cubic foot balloon and aluminium gondola were professionally made by www.modelballoon.com and imported by me from USA. The replacement price of the balloon and gondola is in excess of $A2500!

This is pretty spectacular, and the balloon is about 6 metres high… Continue

More pictures of balloon building

I have added some more pictures to the balloon building blog, one shows the colours of the balloon really well, and the other one below give you a bit of an idea about how we go about cutting.

The battery went flat in the camera today, but tomorow I will post up a short video of sewing in action… Continue

Balloon Building Blog

Check it out: http://balloonbuildingblog.com/

Simply put its a web log (blog) of my go at building a balloon, being a hardcore geek I couldn't resist making a blog about it.

There is not much there at the moment but once things start moving it should get updated fairly regularly with my progress.

funny you should mention the FG.
converted in to the Buggy 3 days ago. It now has a tuned pipe on it.
Still I think the Baja is better as it is an easier vehicle to drive after trying a couple.
This weekend I am going boat and car racing so have been getting them ready that.
The balloon fan still does not have a shroud on it but works very well. Blows it up nice and is easy to start and run.
I will get you to reprogram my board seeing as I have a spare there is no reason to give it a crack.

Got the messages, haven't really looked into them yet.
Yes, going to cave hill creek.
Don't need another 1/5th scale. I never used mine very much, but now I have found a boat and car club I'm using it more than ever. racing other people is fun.
Still turbines are even cooler
