- Hey Kevin. I made the racer pattern myself and built it with standard 1.9 oz westmark. I don't really push the balloon much but it is substantially faster up and down. In terms of numbers, it seems like climbing and descending are about twice as fast. That is, where I would have been at 400 or 500 ft/min in a standard shape, I'll be at 800 or 1000 ft/min in this one. Happy to share the numbers I used for a pattern if you are ever interested. As far as build time, I did it slowly over a couple of years. Something like $2500-$3000 in the envelope with a nomex scoop but nylon first panels. Have a good one.
