We first saw Hot Air Balloons at the Kentucky State Fair Balloon Race in Louisville, Kentucky in August of 1976. We were hooked!
My late-husband and I crewed for several years and then purchased our first balloon in 1984. It was a Raven RX-7. We flew our balloon until 2004 until he hit some power lines shortly after take-off and died following the accident.
My daughters and I still loved the sport, and received so much support from the Ballooning Community, so we purchased a new balloon in April of 2007. We now own an Aerostar. I had not flown for nearly 20 years, so I am starting over in Pilot training.
My oldest daughter is also pursuing her pilot's license, so the Wirt Women will be in the air again soon!
I am presently serving as the Public Relations Chair for the Balloon Society of Kentucky. I am also on the 2008 BFA Convention Committee.
If there is anything you need to know about our Club, or about the Convention, please don't hesitate to ask!
Ok, I was thinking that I'm east of her, so I put down north east instead of north west. She is up by Blue Bunny. That is why I use my gps most of the time.
Hey there!
I have friends in Michigan, so I always watch the weather to see what's happening to them. I haven't flown any either. If it's dry enough, we have tornadoes or straight line winds at 55-70-MPH. If he's calm enough, it's raining or foggy!
Yeah, my nails stay at varying lengths most of the summer months, or you can practice picking things up with your thumb and knuckles...You "pinch" like a crab...that helps.
I usually lift the uprights up and rest one of the bars on my left knee before I start inflating. That makes it easier to light the burner too. You don't have to stand on your head to see if it's lite.
The BFA Convention Committee is having a meeting tonight in Louisville, which is a little over an hour from Lexington. All the final plans for the convention are coming along so well. My company will be printing the Convention program Books, and probably name tags, and a few more things.

Hi Norma...How's the flying going?...weather here has grounded us most of the winter although we did get a decent flight in last Saturday. I have been studying for the written test in my free time. I'd like to get that out of the way before summer.
I have broken quite a few nails packing away the balloon and find it helps wear gloves for the lifting part. I do tend to be hard on our scoop while setting up the balloon. It's like I have to lift the burner frame off the ground to keep from scorching the scoop. Is there a better way?
Great to hear from you! I was home for Christmas but have to work New Year's. I'll be in Ohio on the 1st and may dop by and join you guys for the New Year's Day flight...sounds like fun :))
That's great that Brian bought a van....I'm thinking about doing the same. Give my regards to Jim, Laurie and Brian.
