Steve, the radios we use are Marine VHF, 5 watt. Made by Nautico. You can usually find them for 50 bucks each online. Here in western NC we don't have anybody else on them but an occaisonal hunter. Down near Ed you might have more traffic on them from the lake though. They have like 70 channels so it might still work for you.
