I'm trying to get over the fact that someone let Adam leave Australia as a ambassador and that the americans think he's o.k? If they'll put up with him they'll certainly put up with the rest of us ;-) Mate if the aussie dollar keeps climbing again...

Nice work Andy, something I always wanted to do but just not got around to doing it. One day. The model looks as if it's lit with a light at the top? Just a bright day?

Man that would be cool as to put up that many RC balloons. Angus and my two man show is all we get in Australia.

Profile Information

City, Country:
Canberra, Australia
About Me:
As a kid all our holidays were ballooning holidays. Not that this was a problem but I never really had the bug. I didn't have any great desire to learn to fly. Maybe I just didn't set my goals high enough but I was just happy to wait for my drivers license so I could retrieve. I love retrieving, I'm think I'm pretty good at it.
Don't really remember much about this time though.

Life got busy when I got a job and after leaving home never saw a balloon for 10 years. Then met a guy at work who had bought one and went retrieving for him, with my wife Barbara and new puppy sasha (balloon retrieve dog).
That was the first bite.

Found it very hard to get my license even though my father is an instructor and has a balloon, but being 1100kilometers away was problematic. Got my license in 2000 and after going to an event and learning of a balloon for sale we purchased Toystory a Kavanagh C-65 and possibly the best looking balloon in the world. ;-) That was it, I was bitten.

After living on crackers for a few years, while paying it off we were even able to afford to fly it. ;-) My wife was working in the outback so things were slow as we always do ballooning together.
Did enough flying however to get to my three milestones, first was 50 hours so I could fly at events by myself without a minder pilot, second was 75hrs so I could get my instructors rating, and third was 100hrs so I could fly other peoples balloons for instructing and be on their insurance.

I prefer to fly low, drift through the trees, scrape the top of the Canberra museum, and scratch the stubble in the paddock low. I only go to 1500ft if there is breeze for a box. 5000ft for a student flight is a combination of scary (what if we run out of things to talk about!!!) but mostly boredom for me. ;-)

Favorite flights are ones in which I have Barbara with me, followed by a good river/lake dip. I have a love hate relationship with cloudhoppers and skychariots. I love to fly them but I hate the fact that I don't have one ;-)

Here I have to thank Adam and Steve. Adam For letting me fly the WOFYL envelope attached to his wheelie bin, a cloud hopper and Steve's Sky Chariot. I have as much fun tethering the sky chariot and putting 300 kids though it as I do going for a fly. I know "sick".

I also like RC toys and got an RC balloon for the Worlds in Australia 2004, thanks to Sean for providing the envelope to go with my basket. So now Angus and I terrorise night glows all over the country with our RC balloons.
I am also a "sick" individual according to Adam as I actually like night glows.

My favorite events are Leeton/Griffith at Easter particularly the street parade ;-)
Renmark because at 250kms away its the closest event I can go too.
The Lake, because I like instructing and mucking around.
And finally Cave Hill Creek, because it's the kind of place you can go to and have shit weather and not really care. ;-)

So where am I in the world of ballooning at the moment. Well I am trying to put back as much as I have got out of it. So I instruct for the fun of it, do night glows and tether Adams envelope so i can let as many people as possible experience ballooning. But mostly I have fun.

Oh and i still really like to retrieve, and if you have a cool retrieve vehicle I'll volunteer to drive it. P.s How do you turn the traction control off??

what to do at a ballooning event when the weather is crap?? GEOCACHING.COM

The Half Wit

A commercial hot air balloon pilot owned a small country tourist flying business . The Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

"I want a list of your employees and how much you pay them" demanded the Agent.

"Well," replied the pilot , "there's my main retreive driver who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $400.00 a week plus free room and board. The backup retreive driver/cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $300.00 pe… Continue

A Cows Tale

A man staggered into a hospital with a concussion, multiple bruises, two
black eyes, and a balloon deflator wrapped around his throat.

Naturally, the Doctor asked him, 'What happened to YOU?'

'Well, I was having a lovelly balloon flight with my wife, when we encountered an inversion layer close to the ground and fell through it hard , we both nearly fell out of the basket and all of our radio's, phones and GPS bounced out and into the paddock full of cows.

We went to look for them and while I… Continue

Marriage Philosophy

Four married blokes go ballooning. After the flight while refueling, the following conversation took place:

First bloke: 'You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out flying this weekend.
I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room in the house next weekend.'

Second bloke: 'That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for the pool.'

Third bloke: 'Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I would remodel the kitchen for her.… Continue

Aussie Nationals this weekend. Quick grab a frog now!!!

A junior pilot has just entered his first nationals and is searching for a launch site for a fly in.
He is about to drive onto another spot when he hears “Ribbit, Launch here”
The pilot looks around and doesn’t see any one.
Again he hears, “Ribbit Launch here”
He notices a Frog sitting in the grass, and not being that confident decides to launch from that spot.
He has the best line to the target and gets a 1meter drop and full points.

Shocked he returns to the launch site and says to the frog ‘… Continue

Saturday is looking good. Sunday looks like a blowout.
Maiden'd a new FPV Funjet and FPV Easy Glider last weekend. Both successful and great to fly. Might take them this weekend to get some in air footage... maybe.

The hopper bottom end without radio would be 625 Euros.
A envelope is 810 Euro for a 20 m³ single colored gores.
It would be good the have the radio to set up the valves correctly.
We have equipped the first model with a 2.4GHz radio and it works very well.
1,5 km distance in a car and still working fine, and more channels to use.
That could help us at our meet because we are getting to the limits with
60-65 model balloons and not much more channels available in the old
frequency band.

Going for the Turnigy 80A speedie from HC. It gives a pretty safe margin for the HET which will pull 60+ amps.

Going to get some of the HC 2650 3S and 4S packs too, if they ever come back in stock.

$95 locally or $75 (aud) with apparently free shipping from who knows where... I know where I'm getting mine :-)
Will go a 60A speedie and a 4.1x4.1

The HET is a 700W motor (apparently), the Mega 16/25/3 is only a 450W one (apparently)... 3350kV vs 1700kV
HET is also 20g lighter, but the Mega will draw less current.

Can't believe you didn't take any toys to Renmark... poor form.
