I am a 29 yr old diesel mechanic that was born and raised in a small town of Brookfield Mo. There my wife and I were introduced to a local balloon pilot at the Pershing Balloon Derby by my parents. We crewed for him and was given a ride. after that I was HOOKED! my wife and I recently purchased our first balloon.
woo hoo about getting flight time in! looked like your landing, i'm assuming in the evening, was a little breezy. is that your good luck giraffe in the pictures or something? i can't remember, was this your first flight in Dustin's Dream then? either way it's exciting that the weather finally cooperated. and about that cold weather, it just wouldn't be nice of me not to share it with you! i'm just happy i don't have any snow to share yet. hope to keep it that way for as long as possible.

well it sounds like your hunting season is off to a great start! now let's just see if the weather will hold out for you thanksgiving day/weekend. i guess that's the nice part about hunting, it doesn't matter if it's raining. i can say that i'm tired of the rain, but i'd rather have that then snow. although watch, you won't have rain, but it'll be windy. it seems like it's always something. i'll keep my fingers crossed for decent weather!

awesome pics of the glow! i must say you guys did a good job of finding a balloon that glows well. was that the first time you guys glowed? who knows maybe you'll find time to squeeze in a flight during hunting season. if not then you have something to look forward to!
that's a bummer you couldn't fly, but isn't that how it always works perfect when you're working and crappy when you're not. at least it sounds like you guys had fun just hanging out. maybe this coming weekend you'll get some flight time in.
i'm so excited because yesterday there was a balloon flying by my house so my son and i decided to chase on our own, he's 3 so he gets a kick out of it too. so we chased and watched him land then i ended up talking with the pilot and crew and told them how i'd love to be able to help crew if they needed extra help. so i gave them my name and number and the pilot says he flies year round so fingers crossed they'll call me asking for help. i just hope that they call instead of forgetting, i've had that happen multiple times now. it'd be really nice if i could start getting some experience crewing.
well thanks for the well wishes! we did have a good halloween, a little chilly and breezy, but at least it wasn't raining. how'd the bbq go on sat? were you guys able to fly or was it too gosh darn soggy from all the rain that we have been getting? that's really nice that you have pilots in your area who are willing to train you year round. who knows maybe you'll like winter flying better. the nice part about that is then you can see how your balloon will react to the colder temps. a good lesson to learn if ya ask me!
well I hope you all had a great season flying/crewing and that next year will be even better. hard to believe nov is next week already. time just flies by anymore. sounds like you'll be having a good halloween then with your get together. and tell me about all this rain. it's all i've been dealing with at work, but i just have to remind myself it could be worse. have a good halloween!
hey! fiesta was fun. had one disappointing day where they didn't fly since it decided to storm, but i was able to see the mass ascension of the special shapes which was really neat to see. then the rest of the pilots did the pole grab but only a few made it to the field since the winds didn't want to be very cooperative as the morning went on. i do know that the next time i go i need to go for more days. it was a good experience i'm very glad i went. i was in balloon heaven. i've been meaning to post my pics here so hopefully sometime in the near future i'll have them up so you can see what i saw.
so are you guys all done going to rallies this year? i hate when you get back and have to go to work right away. i did that when we came back from fiesta. definitely wished i would've taken an extra day off to recoop. but at least you had fun in the long run that's all that matters. : )
no fiesta this yr...probably no fiesta for a while. If you want to learn how to not fly a balloon go to fiesta. Its horrible, too many pilots that cant fly their balloons by themselves and need their crew. I have been told many times by many ppl that you, as the pilot, have to be able to fly the balloon yourself, dont expect crew on landings...rob b, the faa examiner in Iowa was telling me about one time he was doing a check ride and told the guy to land in a spot and the guy said he couldnt, rob said sure you can you have this and pulled his red line and landed it in a tight spot.
what did you do when you flew with tim? I just wonder what other pilots do with students because flying with my mom was different, she was really just a passenger and I flew. We'd talk through stuff, but I would fly the whole time...wish I could have counted it as pic time. I flew with gary whitby once but that was b/c my mom wouldnt sign me off on my solo, she didnt want the baggage lol whitby was really just a passenger. I ve flown with others since getting my license but not as training...just curious what training with others is like...
