Lewiston/Auburn Maine Festival

I was invited to fly my Birthday Cake Hot Air Balloon at this years Great Falls Balloon Festival, in Lewiston/Auburn Maine for the 15th anniversary of their balloon festival. Really nice people at that festival. Beautiful area to fly, LOTS of trees.

We got several good flights in and had a great time!

One of the volunteer crew people assigned to me was Gil LeBlanc. He had requested to be assigned to the Birthday Cake. I had known him from previous festivals. However, I didn't know… Continue

Smithsonian Institute: Become a Pilot Day

Saturday, the Smithsonian Instituted Air and Space Museum held their annual BECOME A PILOT DAY. http://www.nasm.si.edu/becomeapilot/

I was invited to bring my hot air balloons down to this event. They had lots of aircraft flown into the museum for the event, including a C-17, and an Osprey, along with lots of General Aviation airplanes, gliders, hang gliders, etc. There were a few fighter jets and helicopters too.,

We lost a lot of momentum over the winter, but we are getting back on track. We spent the Memorial day weekend sewing and learning about sewing. We now have one side done and a much better plan on how to sew the rest of it. Barbi is going to cut the rest of the fabric this week and she will sew on more side and I will sew one more side. at that time we should have the sides all done and ready to join them. Our panels are horizontal. I am still wrestling with the cap. the current plans are for a parachute cap of about 20' in diameter. I am thinking we should enlarge it to at least 24-25' and put in a paravent/smart vent ....

Thoughts?

Keith,

I've had more fun with this balloon than I could ever have dreamed of. I had a 90 appendage Aerostar and got sick of the work involved. I want something in a 77, but now that Aerostar is out of the game, what experience do you have with other systems?

I have two Aurora's, and several other balloons.

What appendage balloon did you have? I have three shapes and love them!

Keith,

I've got to ask you...Where did you come up with the design of your shape? I love the Aurora, just a little too small to take passengers.
