What not to do to a new balloon..

Ahh, nothing like a deadline to make you do stupid things.

My dear old Dad, needing (wanting??) a new balloon has run into a small problem of weather and time in the lead up to the Australian National Championship. As such today we put up his brand new 77 in the poring rain for the test inflation so there would be time to get the CofA processed before the competition.

All the forecasts indicated we would have more wind and rain if we waited so this was as they say, as good as… Continue

Aunty Monkey Tip #2 - Profile Pages

I have noticed a few people have started playing around with the design of their profile pages. There is an excellent blog post on the Ning blog that talks about what can be done. Check it out.

The journey begins...

Well my balloon making journey has begun. I just purchased a Singer Industrial, Twin Needle sewing machine off eBay, cost me the whole of $152.50, absolute bargain if I do say so myself.

Anyhoo, expect some more blogs on balloon making, over the next few months. I will not actually start until the end of this year.

Thanks to Adam for the advice on the Machine ;)…

Movie recommendations

People often ask me what movie they should see. My answer? I don't know you, get the hell away from me. But because I know you lovely people here on the interweb, here are some movies I'd recommend;

Hostel 2 - The sequel to Hostel, a charming romp in which a group of American backpackers discover why you shouldn't trust Europeans when they get tortured and killed. This installment stars Heather Mazzaro from Welcome to the Dollhouse and Bijou Philips, the daughter of one of the…

The horror of Blimps

Last week while travelling I stopped at a Tandy’s store and saw that they had a blimp for sale. It's called Airship Earth, and it's a great big airship shaped silver balloon, and three propellers hanging from the bottom. You blow up the balloon with helium put batteries in it, and you have a radio controlled indoor blimp.

I'd seen these things…

Pibal Lights

Finally received my new batteries for my Piball lights.

I got 100 of one type, but they turned out to be a bit too heavy, do I got another 100 of a new type which is alot lighter.

The cool thing about these is the LED, its a green wide angle, 120deg, flat top LED.

Green because that is the most receptive colour to the human eye, so easy to see at night.

Wide angle means that instead os like a normal…

Laptop Mount Pt.1

Just a few pics of my laptop/tablet mounting system for the balloon.

The mount so far is a simple but of ply with pins edges, all covered in a single layer of black felt.

The velcro strap goes between the keyboard and screen when the laptop is in tablet mode, which secures it nicely.

This is my second go at a box for the laptop, and this one is alot lighter than the last which is a good thing. Another thing to keep in mind, is that my last box I made to… Continue

Its Here !!!!

The new envelope got into Albuquerque via Train Saturday night. I went and picked it up at the terminal Sunday morning at 5:00 am and was in the air by 7:00. It flew so amazing. What a difference from the old worn out envelope I have been flying. The inflation has to be on the top of my list as one of the scariest. I just did not want to make a mark any where on the first inflation. But all went great. Got it stood up, and even had a chance to get out of the basket and take a look at it from a… Continue

Smithsonian Institute: Become a Pilot Day

Saturday, the Smithsonian Instituted Air and Space Museum held their annual BECOME A PILOT DAY. http://www.nasm.si.edu/becomeapilot/

The event opened to the public at 10am, and we started… Continue

Getting my private certificate...finally!

Way back on November 4, 2006 I had an awful day. I went for my check ride with a DE who is EXTREAMLY black and white and not at all personable. Hey, my fault, I was warned. With in 2 minutes he told me that I failed the test and I could fly on and continue the rest of it or land. Of course I flew on, at the end he commented that I did everything perfectly (except the first task, of course) and that he would re-test me for an additional large sum of money. So...for the next 2 months I…

Is it going to be a very cold winter?

It was April and the Hot Air balloonists asked their Australian Balloon Federation President if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.

Since he was a President in a modern society, when he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.

Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told the club members that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the ABF…

Tetrahedron Balloon

I have just been bit with the Tetrahedron balloon building bug. The effects of this attack are very infectious. The bite occurs quickly upon reading a variety of web sites devoted to the subject and over a period of time the venom of the attack seeps deep in to your nervous system until your every thought is consumed with dropping everything and beginning construction on the balloon. The steps of the infection are obvious, Stage one, you dive head first into a state of learning soaking up…

First, I want to say thank you for setting up this site. I think it is a great idea. I know it is going to grow.

Second;

100 Members!

Wow, we just got our 100th member (welcome Michelle). We also have a whopping 600 photos and 20 videos.

Not bad for a couple of weeks. But I am sure we can do better. Just think, ever everyone just invites 1 person, we will be up to 200 people.

Renmark SA 2007

Once again the Renmark event has been an absolute hoot!!

I flew a few hours, tethered for about an hour, and had my first flight in the rain!

I had a great weekend and I am sure everyone else did too, we flew Saturday morning, tethered in the Afternoon, Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Lots of fun an antics like usual, I am sure Justin will post up some video's soon. (Nudge/Hint ;-))

History of Aunty Monkey - Parts IV to VI

If you haven't read the first part of this history, go to the History of Aunty Monkey - Parts I to III.

Part IV – End of the era

All in all, I think we ended up putting out 15 or so issues over a 4 year period. Eventually, the editors and the key contributors started growing up and began to get real jobs. The print version started coming out later and later, and eventually stopped… Continue

History of Aunty Monkey - Parts I to III

I am sitting on a 13 hour flight from Sydney to LA, so I figured this is as good a time as any to write a bit about the history of Aunty Monkey and how it got to where it is now. And no…I am not going to tell you where the name came from. I’ll save that for another day (maybe).

Part I – The Beginning

In the early 1990s there was a bit of turmoil in Australian ballooning. People were trying to sue each other and there was a fair bit of “side” taking going on. At the time… Continue

second update on Fire

I didn't want to leave the impression that all is bad. Actually Life Is God. We feel very blessed in a lot of ways. One we survived and had so much help with friends and family. The ups and downs are minor, just annoying. There have been a lot of changes that have happened but all are surmountable and need a little patience. I'm learning about that.

No more practise, just rain and wind.

Photo: Sydney Morning Herald

This photo pretty much sums up my chances of getting some practise flying in this weekend for the Aussie Nationals (28 days to go!). One of the joys of still being a colony of the UK is we get a long weekend this weekend to celebrate the Queen's birthday (the fact her birthday is in April pretty much sums up…
