Man this makes me feel old but.... My oldest daughter, Amanda, is graduating from High School this weekend and will begin her college career at SUNY Potsdam on August 22nd. Mom and I are extremely proud of her and are thrilled that she is able to attend the college that was her 1st choice.
It seems like only yesterday when she was getting on her first school bus ride to kindergarten while her mom and I watched with tears in our eyes. I write this with tears in my eyes as I have had the… Continue
The question most frequently asked is, “Why go to Michigan in December?” The simple answer is to fly in the Holiday Balloon Festival, held every year the first weekend in December. If only it were just that simple…
What other festival gives you the opportunity, as Mark Shilling so aptly puts it, to “drive from Vermont to Battle Creek and back, in December, just for the event jacket…”
What other festival has you throwing evergreen wreaths… Continue
Hey there Sheep.
Any input for the July issue?
Gettin started here so that I can get it out first week or so.
If anyone wants the June copy I have a few left.
The "Black Sheep" Squadron has hit the road this year sharing our story with other pilots at nearby festivals. It all started last year with the Adirondack Balloon Festival raising their hours yet keeping most local pilots out! Well, We decided to stay together and fly as "ONE" as we do every weekend in this area. Come up and say Hello at some local festivals!
We started this past weekend at Camp Waubeeka in Copake, NY (Pics are… Continue

Well I just spent the last 6 1/2 hours helping 2 of my crew clean out their house after now that the flood waters have receded here in Cedar Rapids. I have to say it's probably the biggest incentive I have ever had to not be a pack-rat. They are among the lucky ones if that is possible. They will be able… Continue
Now that Aunty Monkey (The Balloon Network) has been up and running for over a year now, I think it is time we celebrate and recognize the high achievers (tall poppies) of the network. So let me introduce the “2008 Annual Aunty Monkey Awards”, otherwise known as the “Monkies”.
Below are this year’s winners of the various categories (the ones I could think of). I am more than happy to add more categories if people can think of some.…
I was out on the town the other night having a few quiet ones with my crew in Goulburn - as the night drew on I met this fantastic sheila named Cindy - anyway after a wild night I took her ballooning in the morning over Lake George only to find that when we got back to our hotel she left without leaving her name or number.
Perhaps you could assist me to find this remarkable woman or at least let me know… Continue

Tonight I had the opportunity to do one of the coolest things ever . . . . crew for the Brooks and Dunn hot air balloon before their concert at Blossom Music Center in Cleveland. Cindy met me at my house at 2:45pm and Mike and Debby picked us up around 3:15. We made our way to Blossom and arrived at around 4:10. We met Joe (the pilot of the B&D balloon) by the truck and started talking about the weather. It was beautiful and sunny with some large clouds in the sky, but nothing looked to… Continue
This past weekend was the Thurston Classic Balloon Festival in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The weather looked like it was going to be so - so and we were not expecting anything for the weekend. After only about an hour and fifteen minute car ride, we arrived at the Days Inn on Friday @ around 3:00pm. We checked into the hotel, registered, and then made our way to our room. We got ourselves ready for a flight, met Aaron, (our local crew) and headed for the field. There were storms all over and… Continue

Three commercial balloon pilots, sitting together bragging about how they had told their new wives what their
balloon crewing duties were:
Terry had married an English girl, and bragged that he had told her that in addition to retrieve driving,
she had to do all the navigating by herself and refueling too.
He said that it took a couple of flights before he saw any results, but on the third flight he
landed and she was already there, she then refueled, and… Continue
This past weekend I traveled with Debby Young to Coshocton, Ohio to compete in the Coshocton County Hot Air Balloon Festival. The weather looked like it was going to be decent, with the possibility of rain on Saturday. The drive down was quick and painless and when we arrived we were the first ones to register. It looked great, but breezy and we weren't convinced there was going to be a flight that night. Sure enough, the flight was canceled and after enjoying a hog roast dinner we went back to… Continue

It has been some years since I first set eyes upon the photos of the Letchworth, New York. The images had been posted somewhere online I just had to find out where this place was!
Sure enough, the balloons I saw flying in those photos were part of a small get together put on by the local commercial pilot, Sean Quigley. Sean owns a ride-company that offers scenic flights over the gorge… Continue
