Ballooning for profit, does it take the fun out of it?

As background for anyone who doesn't know me, I started ballooning back in 2008 with the Royal Australian Air Force Balloon (which we use to advertise the Air Force around the country) and quickly fell in love with the sport. Three years later, I've obtained a class 1 Commercial licence and started my own commercial balloon business, www.beballooning.com.au on the side of my Air Force work.

Although I still enjoy myself while flying…

Fun Morning Ballooning @ Dirnaseer

Flew for 1 hour 40 minutes this morning. Wind from 180 2.5 knots at low level to 80 at 12 knots @ 500 feet. Spent most of the time below 200 feet. Fast over the hills, over 20 knots. The crops look the best they have for over a decade. Last good year here was 1999. Limited landing sites, due to the large amount of crop. Weather for tommorrow morning is also looking like it will be excellent. The new diesel Outback is a good retrieve vechile. Cope with the hills with a trailer on well. Also uses… Continue

Inspiration

I got my Ballooning Magazine today... the editor's column posed a question that I want to ask all of you... Who (or what) inspired your love of flying?

As for me, I'd have to say that I really do think I was born with this need to be above the world flying (go figure with a name like mine!) I remember my very first flight of any kind... I was 18 or 19 months old and my parents took me and my very new to the world little brother on a plane ride to visit relatives in…

Ask Yourself These Two Questions

In March I was lucky enough to attend a safety seminar that had a presenter who's entire segment revolved around the idea that back in the day we (the balloon community) used to talk about flights we had. Not brag, not shoot the bull with an adult beverage in hand, but talk and dissect and question the hows and whys of the flight. If things didn't go well we were willing to share what happened, why it happened (or why we thought it happened) and if we didn't know, to ASK other pilots and get… Continue

One less Old Timer - Bert Cox

Hi All

Its with sadness I let you all know of the passing of one of the real characters in Aussie ballooning, Bert Cox.

Bert died in hospital after a run in with the big C.

Bert will be remembered for many things, his faithful yellow overalls, the battered Troopy that had been everywhere, his flowing wiskers, his booming voice, and his great sense of humour.

Most of all he will be remembered for his passion for the sport in all its…

Profile Photos - Important - Please Read

Hi Everyone

Most of you will have seen the site has been getting hit by more and more spammers in the recent months.

One of the issues in maintaining the site is it is often difficult to tell who are the genuine members and those who are not.

One of the areas we have identified is the profile photos. Most of the spammers who join do not upload a profile picture.

As a result we are asking all members to update their profiles and add a profile picture. This is… Continue

Play nice or I am turning the site off!

What is going on? All of a sudden there are all sorts of people bagging each other out (in a non-sarcastic, non-smiley face way) on the site.

I can't spend all day answering complaint emails about one person said this or another person said that. I am currently spending most my day getting rid of spammers, so I don't have time to read every post and moderate what everyone is saying.

Seriously.... if people don't start playing nice on the site I will turn it off.

Return to UK

Well, I made it home on Wednesday evening after a, thankfully, boring flight. Richard & Emma who were on a flight just 12 hours later had the misfortune to be turned back 3 hours into the DXB-LHR sector due to ash from the Icelandic volcano. I'm not sure if the "powers that be" are being ultra cautious or whether there is serious risk this far south, but the whole of the UK's airspace is to be closed as from 1200 today (Thursday) "until further notice". The situation could also affect… Continue

A Journy to Pilot

From a very early age I have day-dreamed of floating. Be it in water, the sky, or space. It has always been a favorite theme for me. In March of 2000 I joined the USMC. In December of that same year, while in school for my Occupation Specialty, I got my Open Water dive cert and began SCUBA diving with a fervor. I did that until the allergy gods caught up to me and chronic congestion forced me to leave the water for the foreseeable future in 2004.

In March of 2005 I got my Honorable… Continue

Another Great morning Ballooning over Canberra

Sunday morning was another great flying morning over Canberra. There where 3 commerical passenger balloons and 2 private balloons. We all launched from The Causeway Oval and flew over the KIngston forehores , Barton Deakin and Yarralumla. All the balloons landed in or near Yarralumla Oval. There was a lot more steerage than on Saturday morning. A number of local balloonists also flew at Gundaroo as well. We all had a great time and are now counting the sleeps to the Sun Rise event at Leeton.… Continue
