I'm the oldest of 4 kids in my family. I'm a senior at Michigan State University studying Packaging Engineering. Thanks to my brother's interest in becoming a pilot, he talked my dad into buying a new FireFly 77 that he named "Summer Glow". My brother James and my Dad Jeff both have their Private license. I'm currently attending an LTA ground school and preparing for my written. My brother hopes to have his commercial completed by the spring so I can start my training.
Living in Battle Creek when I was younger made it pretty easy to get involved in ballooning. My family's house was about a mile south of the airport so we've always had balloons flying over, taking off, or landing on our 60+ acres of land. I remember one of the first balloons to ever land on our property was one of the Four Seasons balloons "Sunny Boy". I will never forget how excited I was that day.
While I was attending Battle Creek Lakeview High School, one of my football coaches told our team about volunteering at the Balloon Festival and Air Show. Everyone I knew that volunteered helped out with parking, but i signed up to be a volunteer crew member. I was the first person in my family to personally get involved with ballooning..... even though my brother James (who you all know) might claim otherwise. He was the first one in the family to get his private License at the age of 18 so I'll give him that. I helped crew for Norah Ormerod and the "Eyes of Horus" balloon. I crewed for her again the following year, and when she asked if I knew of anyone else that wanted to get up at 4:30 am to help out, I told her My Brother! I knew it was his dream to get involved with ballooning and someday become a pilot himself. This was his first opportunity and he never looked back from there.
I believe Norah is still flying and think she is in the mid-west somewhere. I'll have to check the BFA memberlist. We located each other that way before. She was/is a lot of fun to learn from! I credit her with most of my good crew habits.
Hi Steve,
My name is Susan Bennett and I crewed for Norah many, many years ago in Mass. I went with her to Battle Creek one year and was in a cast and on crutches. Have you kept in touch with her? Last time Norah and I emailed I believe she was in the Midwest but I've lost touch.
I am putting a video together with all sorts of ballooning pics and video and I was wondering if I could use your pics/vids in it? It is all just for fun and would be posted here whenever it is done.
Hi there Steve. How are u doing? Staying warm? It's like 80 degrees out here in California. Anyways my name is Rosemary, but I mostly go by Rose for short. I live out here in Southern California, but my family and I didn't get started in ballooning until 93 when we were living in Cheyenne, WY which is my hometown by the way. Anyways I see that u and I are both the same age. That's really cool. I hardly ever go out ballooning because I don't have anybody our age to hangout with. :( Well I am def looking forward to talking to you soon. Oh FYI, I am hardly ever on here but feel free to send me an e-mail whic is on my page okay? Oh and if u want to come join me on IP(Infield Parking) that would be cool too. U can also find my sn for IP on my page on here as well. Have a great holiday weekend.
Hey dude, had a good time with yah yesterday, thx for posting pics of Frankenmuth, that was an awesome time as well, keep in touch and we'll catch up later!
someones page needs some work....like an "about me" section so we can all learn who you are and what you do and what got you started in ballooning. Also, maybe a few pictures up on here....and then take one of those pictures and make a nice little background. c'mon now, dont 1/2 ass this thing!
