Update #22

At last check in the progress was 17 gores of completed panels. Only 3 more to go. Nomex arrived mid-week so that is one less thing to worry about. Only think left that is integral to the sewing is the load tapes. Arnold’s don’t seem to want to talk to me over the phone or over [...]

More forms, less sanity.

Just finished faxing off another round of forms to CASA late this week. Turns out a “Reservation of Rego Mark - Form0028″ needs to be submitted before you can register the aircraft, who would have thought! Also needed is an ARN (Aviataion Reference Number) as well, so that application form needs to be filled out. To [...]

Nomex

Purchased the nomex today from Melba Industries. It is the lighter 150gsm version type, and is about $40 per linear meter. It ended up costing $849.92, a bit more than I expected, due to some companies inability to quote prices with GST, seeing as how you actually have to pay it. Next task is to get [...]

A quick update on (recently named) VH-XUP

At last “check-in” with the sew-master, we were up to 13 sets of gores, this is all the panels put into single gores ready to be sewn together. Progress is going well, and getting quicker and quicker with each stich. I am starting to get some of the “other” bit’s organised here in Melbourne, such as load [...]

Some pictures

I realized that I haven’t shown any pictures up close of the cutting process. Yes we are *still* cutting, but come lunchtime tomorow we will have cut 100% of panels, and hopefully get a gore or two sewn up before the weekends out. Here is some of arrow “test” panels sewn up. Colours look great in real [...]

About Me:
I have been ballooning since I can remember, and probably before that...

I have had my license for a while now, got it as soon as I turned 17, but not getting many hours because *someone* doesn't like sharing :D

Currently 18 and at RMIT Uni in Melbourne studying (the word "studying" is used loosely).

Interested in duct taping geekey tech things to balloons. Like flying solo... Flying high is boring, low is much more fun eh Justin?

Currently building my own balloon with my dad, see http://balloonbuildingblog.com
The plan is to have it finished for the lake this year.

Like trying new things out with ballooning, especially for competition, as in gadgets and gizmos, also like a bit of photography on the side (see the crop rings above?).

Oh and he who has the most toys wins... The Lake '08 - bring it! :P

I have added some more pictures to the balloon building blog, one shows the colours of the balloon really well, and the other one below give you a bit of an idea about how we go about cutting. The batter… Continue

Balloon Building Blog

Check it out: http://balloonbuildingblog.com/

Simply put its a web log (blog) of my go at building a balloon, being a hardcore geek I couldn't resist making a blog about it.

There is not much there at the moment but once things start moving it should get updated fairly regularly with my progress.

Balloon Builders Mailing List??

I thought this would be a good enough place to ask :-)

Does anyone know where I can find information on the "Balloon Makers" mailing list, or know how I can subscribe to it?

Cheers ;-)

Found this on the interweb...

Found this earlier today, 10 cool points to whoever guesses correctly what it is.
Another 10 cool points to whoever can find the UFO's shadow ;-)

In the top 20 of Hot Air Ballooning sites!!!

I have been waiting for this, and probably missed it by a day or two but if you look here:
http://www.hotairballooning.com/top/

Is it a list of the Top 50 (there's actually something like 100) Hot Air Ballooning websites.

At time of posting we are currently 15th, which is very cool.

Is there anywhere that says stats of this site? Like members, blogs, photos etc??

Yes the load tapes are internal. I believe they are called Kevron and Cameron is using this method commonly. My balloon has the same, but this is a racer that the factory owns.

Is your new balloon made out of Cameron fabric by any chance?

mine will be faster than the ones on the web. They are all 12lbs to 18lbs.
Mine will have a jetcat P120 at 28.5lbs. Should be a missile. ;-)

So much to do, so little time.
I am spending every chance I get to work on my RC Jet Turbine JAS-39 Gripen, so don't have much time for anything else. Was supposed to be finished for jet action 30thmay but that is a no can do. ;-(
For Renmark will have rc balloon, combat wing and night flying shocky, plus adams envelope and chariot. Not bringing toystory. Debating whether to bring dead ansett to play with?

Yes will bring it to the lake, probably also bring a float plane for flying off the lake. ;-) We can fly combat wings up and down the road in front of the building ;-)
Getting the rc balloon ready for a free flight. We'll have to get video and drivers to help. Should be cool.
Need some sort of glider to chuck out of flying balloons too!! Probably looking at a funjet and this will have to do.
