About Me:
I live in Apex NC and fly around Angier area. I have been a pilot for 23 years. I have flown all over the US and in Metz France. I think so far the most beautiful place I have flown was Gallop NM. Fiesta is a fun rally but Gallop is beautiful.
My latest accomplishment was surviving a house explosion that destryoed everything I had including my balloon. So far I am not getting back into ballooning until all the house stuff and money gets settled.
My best accomplishment would be my 23 year old son, Stephen Hanthorn. He is a junior at NC State (someday he will graduate I just know it).
My company is Windflower Adventures LLC and I also fly with Walt Brown, Riding the Clouds.

We are in the house

It took 11 months and 14 days but we are back in the house. It looks really nice. Almost exactly as it was before with a few minor door placement changes and a bigger master closet. We could not figure out a way to move the master bedroom from over the garage to the other side of the houe, so that stayed the same. Now we are working on landscaping and trying to get new grass to grow during a drought.

I am developing a hints and tips list of things people need to be aware of when gettin…

second update on Fire

I didn't want to leave the impression that all is bad. Actually Life Is God. We feel very blessed in a lot of ways. One we survived and had so much help with friends and family. The ups and downs are minor, just annoying. There have been a lot of changes that have happened but all are surmountable and need a little patience. I'm learning about that.

Update on House rebuilding and aftermath of Fire

It has been a long 9 months. After the fire, the first thing is to deal with insurance and find a place to live. We are renting a house right down the street from where we lived. It worked out great. The insurance pays for loss of use so the rent is paid as we continue to pay for the mortgage.

Here are a couple of frustrating things about insurance and what we went through.

Even though you have replacement cost, you do "Up to a limit". Your policy has limits. Our content limit w…

Glad to hear you are getting things back together. I'm still not sure about the cloudhopper thing, it looks cool, but I just wonder about tank leaks or rough landings. Would like to try it sometime I guess. Merry Christmas!

Karen, I don't know if you remember me but you knew my folks I think, Buck and Louise Egerton. I think we bought a 3.9 basket from you one time. They arent flying too much anymore, just a couple rallies, but I got my private so I am flying some now. Sorry to hear about your house, hope everything is working out alright.

Hi Karen,

Yeah, there's a guy who says he's in Raleigh, NC who's ordered a new cloudhopper. Wrote to ask me some questions. I'm not sure on my plans yet. Hope to get at least as far as Charlottesville over the holidays. Also thinking of going down to see the balloonworks sometime soon. I'll have to wait and see on Raleigh. You may want to "help" this guy out, if he turns out to be nice.

Hey Karen,

Heard from a fella that read my review and ordered a cloudhopper. Just learned to fly at a school. Guess where he lives? Sounds like Rally.....

Hi Karen,

Careful what you offer. I just might wander down that way. Spent the last 2 Christmas's at my brothers in Charlottesville, Virginia. On Christmas Eve we flew 3 cloudhoppers together. Lots of fun and 3 lucky families had giant ornaments land on their lawns.

Karen,

Wow! What a year! I'll take a hurricane over a fire anyday. Glad to see you can also see the good things that are out there. Good luck with the building. It is actually nice sometimes and just wait until you can move into your brand new house. That will be a blessing!

Karen...we share a common friend (penny beirman from ABQ). She speaks very highly of you, and she's one of my favorite people. Plus she always smells good and is a hell of a cook.

Hi Karen...thanks for the comments on my page!

What you described sounds like the Stampede Balloon Race we used to have here. The event stopped in mid 90's as the city was simply to big to fly over with any chance of landing in the country and the sponsorship was no longer available. The commercial guys are really having a hard time flying over the city now. There is still a lot of flying going on but it's out in the country, usually east of town.
